Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen on match day 6 in the Bundesliga desperate to pick up 3 points after their frustrating draw against Frankfurt.
Borussia Dortmund are going through a bit of a dip in form right now after drawing against both Barcelona and Frankfurt. Now at face value that doesn’t seem so bad, but having watched both games Dortmund really should have won both games. Their lack of killer instinct hindered the results in both games. Against Barca, they dominated but weren’t able to convert. Against Frankfurt they weren’t dominant but went up twice in the game only to give up a goal in the 89th minute.
Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen have had some mixed results thus far this season, with 2 wins and 3 losses so far in the Bundesliga. This represents a poor start to the season having only played one team from the top half of the table. Although it hasn’t been the best start for Bremen it is not like they are getting dominated, they have been in every game, even losing games where they have dominated possession and shots. Bremen’s strength is in the midfield with Nuri Sahin, Maximilian Eggestein and Davy Klaasen, if Bremen are going to get a result against Dortmund it will be because they won the midfield. Bremen keeper Jiri Pavlenka is also known to perform well against Dortmund.
Team News
Borussia Dortmund will be without Nico Schulz and potentially Mats Hummels as well. Schulz is still recovering from his injury on international duty and Hummels’ health is in question after coming off with a back injury against Frankfurt. Dortmund will however get reinforcements in Lukasz Piszczek and Mateu Morey who are now fully involved in team training. Marco Reus has come under some scrutiny for his less than stellar play recently, I for one would not be surprised if he has a breakout game to get back on track.
Opposition star man: Maximilian Eggestein
Eggestein is a player who’s contributions don’t put him on the stat sheet week in week out. He is the workhorse behind this Bremen team, taking a massive step forward in the past couple seasons. He will be the key man to open up space for Bremen and try and get through Axel Witsel in the midfield. He was rumored to potentially be on his way to Dortmund prior to signing his contract extension.
Previous match: Werder Bremen 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
The last time these two sides met was in April, when Borussia Dortmund blew a two goal lead, which cost them dearly in the title race. Christian Pulisic gave the Black and Yellows the lead in just the sixth minute, before Paco Alcacer made it 2-0 with a lovely free-kick on the stroke of half time.
A spirited second half comeback saw Werder Bremen score twice in five minutes, as Borussia Dortmund were made to rue missed chances. The game ended all square, and Lucien Favre’s side ended up losing the title by two points.
Expected Lineup
Borussia Dortmund: Burki – Piszczek, Akanji, Zagadou, Guerreiro – Witsel, Delaney – Sancho, Reus, Brandt – Gotze
Werder Bremen: Pavlenka – Lang, Gebre Salassie, Langkamp, Freidl – Sahin, Eggestein, Klaasen – Sargent, Eggestein, Rashica
Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen this weekend as they look to get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund have to get a win against Bremen to stop the bleeding as they risk falling further behind both Leipzig and Bayern in the title race. The draw against Eintracht Frankfurt is still fresh in everyone’s mind as Dortmund look to move forward and get back on track.
Borussia Dortmund are for sure without Nico Schulz in this game and it’s questionable if Mats Hummels will be able to take part after coming off injured against Frankfurt. Missing Hummels would be a massive blow as he has arguably been Dortmund’s best player thus far.
Here we take a look at how Borussia Dortmund could line up.
Goalkeeper: Roman Bürki
Despite training individually on Thursday, Roman Bürki should be fit to start between the sticks on Saturday as Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen. Bremen’s goalie Jiri Pavlenka has a history of playing exceptional against Dortmund so Burki will have to be at his best as Dortmund may not score too many times.
